At the 2025 Marrakech International Film Festival, Shashat Media spoke with Laurence Fishburne about the lasting impact of The Matrix and why certain films continue to resonate across generations.
Fishburne described The Matrix as a film that can be watched at any age. Wherever you are in your life, he believes, the story offers something different. It reflects many of the core experiences people encounter as they grow: self-discovery, doubt, belief, and the challenge of choosing a path.
He explained that the film changes depending on the viewer. What speaks to you when you are young may not be the same thing that resonates later in life. That flexibility, Fishburne said, is what has allowed the film to remain relevant for so long.
Speaking about Morpheus, Fishburne described the character as universal. Rather than belonging to a specific time or place, Morpheus represents guidance, faith, and the courage to see beyond what is immediately visible. These qualities, he said, are part of the human experience, which is why audiences continue to connect with the character decades later.
Fishburne also reflected on the moment Morpheus came into his life, calling it a rare alignment between actor and role. It was, he said, a situation where the right actor and the right character came together at exactly the right time.
At Marrakech 2025, Fishburne spoke with clarity and calm reflection, emphasizing that the true power of a story lies in its ability to grow with its audience. For him, The Matrix and Morpheus remain meaningful not because they belong to the past, but because they continue to meet people wherever they are in life.
